Vacation is over, time to get back to my blog!
The last few weeks have been fun preparing for, and then enjoying, a treasured visit from my daughter & grandson. Ideas were hatched, plans unfolded and the week was dubbed, “Camp Grandma.”
A picture is worth a thousand words, and this post is photo heavy.
One of the highlights of Camp Grandma was building a fairy house. I discovered a fairy ring of mushrooms in the grass while mowing, which is caused from old tree fungus or something like that. The much more fun explanation (and the one we decided could be true) is that they’re caused by fairies dancing in a circle at night. We decided to build a little house to invite the fairies into the garden. Noah was very excited about gathering materials from the woods for this construction project.
We found big mounds of moss on the rocks and made a soft foundation.
The driftwood came from boating trips on the lake and the birch bark strips from the woodpile. Jessi & Noah finished it off with pine cones, grasses and rocks then placed a little gift inside. Noah chose a heart-shaped bead and some tiny flowers.
It was such a great week – the time flew by in a blur of fun. So what do you remember about summer visits to Grandma’s house?

I had to look at that apple a couple of times – I couldnt wrap my brain around what I was seeing – after it sunk in – boy does that look like a great treat….looks like you had a lot of fun!

Ah – the apples are such a treat! The photo is not the greatest, but that is a “Turtle Caramel Apple” with caramel, chocolate and pecans.

I’ve read about “fairie rings” before, but had never seen one until now. Cool! I had a very bizarre fascination with fungi as a kid. I’m still a little in awe of toadstools.

I’ve always lived in dry climates, and hadn’t seen any until living up here. Honestly, it was kind of freaky to find a circle of mushrooms growing in the lawn but I understand they’re pretty common when it rains a lot. I like the superstitious explanation of circles of fairies dancing on the lawn in the night.

Glad to see you back. Camp grandma looks like a great place to spend some time. I will have all of my grandkids here over the next two weeks and looking forward to seeing them all. First three will be here in about an hour.

Thanks, Larry. I think the little guy felt that way, too. Enjoy your grandkids!

I am LOVING “Camp Grandma”. What a wonderful post and a great week you had. Where do I start?…Great photo of Noah and the root beer float. What a handsome young man. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Killdeer nest, but have seen the chicks right after they hatch. They’re the cutest, little balls of fluff on long legs. Great photo of the tour on the lake. Is that the Glacier side in the background? I don’t know what a fairy ring is, but love the fairy house! How fun. What a great idea to paint bug rocks. Cute..cute..cute. I’ll take a glass of white wine with those greens and I’m so in for Camp Grandma! Hugs and thanks for sharing your week.
Vickie said:
Thanks! We had so much fun. The kildeer was in the wild part of my yard and I just happened to see her when I was mowing. A fairy ring is a circle of mushrooms in the grass – caused by old tree fungus I think. The myth that they’re caused by fairies dancing in the lawn is much more fun, though, so that’s what I’m going with. 🙂 Oh, and the mountains are at the south end – the opposite end from Glacier Park. I believe you’re seeing part of the Mission Mountains.

I never saw my grandmother without an apron on until her funeral… always had a treat for us in the pockets of that apron!

Grandma lived on her 200+ acre farm in North Carolina so my summer trips there were the favorite part of my year. Learning to fish with granddad, learning to shoot the .22 rifle, exploring the pack houses and barns on my own, riding on the tractor, running through rows of corn……sigh. You hit a memory vein.

I hope my grandson will say this one day. I’m guessing that those visits were their favorite part of the year as well!

That fairy house is amazing. On our grandparents farm we’d spend hours chasing lizards by the creek, run up and down hills that we didn’t have at home, and just sometimes sit very very still. When wombats get startled they scratch a little hollow and lower their head onto the ground so you can’t see their face and might think they are a stone. We would sit beside them for a long time waiting for him to lift his head. He never did but we were hopeful. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

What a fun memory! I love the description of the wombats and the hopefulness of waiting. My grandson rolls in the large grassy lawn with the dog, watches the eagles & hawks and loves the different nature up here. We have loads of fun dancing, cooking and reading as well. I like to think he’s storing fun memories for life.

Camp Grandma is a perfect place to be! What a great week.
I definitely could have gone for that root beer float and caramel apple treat-awesome.

As long as the kids think it’s the perfect place, I’m happy. (and the sweets are some good “naughty fun”) 😉

Awww, how wonderful Vickie! You make me wish I could take a trip to Camp Grandma, such lovely simple precious times. Love that you take for the important things in life *hugs*

I was blessed to have a young grandma (like you) who liked to do all kinds of Indian stuff with us. I should write a post about it. It’s nice that even in my 50s, my grandma is still alive and although she doesn’t get around like she once did, she still sharp and likes it when I fix her biscuits.

We do have our fun when we get together – lots of dancing and laughing. For the record I’m not all that young, just young at heart. 🙂 Kiss that grandma of yours and make her day. Thanks for stopping by.

We just spent about 10 fun filled days playing at our own “Camp Grandma!” Our highlight of the summer it is, really.
I think that Noah and my kids go to school together??!! What a small world. He is cute!
Vickie said:
They do go to school together – I hope to meet you one day! Hope you post about your Camp Grandma – it’s the highlight of her summer as well, I’m sure. 😉
